John C. and
Sophia (Kuhlman) Morman
John Christian Morman was the son of emigrants Johann Christian and Magdalena (Hoeffliger) Morman.
John was born on May 25, 1861, near the eve of the Civil War, probably in Effingham, Illinois. (Source: Patricia Crowley).
When John was a young adult, tragedy struck his family. His father, two sisters, and one brother all died within a two year period.
About a year later, on October 27, 1887, John married a young lady named Sophia Maria Johanna Kuhlman. Sophia was from a family of German emigrants. Her father, Henry Kuhlman, had helped start St. John's Lutheran church where the Mormans and the Kuhlmans attended. Click here for more information about Sophia's family.
They were married in the town of Bishop, lived in Effingham in the 1890's (234 N. Willow Street), and by 1900, lived in Watson, where they stayed for many years. All of these are small towns in Effingham County.
John and Sophia had five children: Carl, John Christian, Jr., Ted (our ancestor), Mellie, and Josephine.
John died December 10, 1935, in Humboldt, Coles County, IL. and was buried at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Watson, IL. (Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947).
Sophia died December 27, 1953, and also buried at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. (Source:Joan Bohnhoff and Elinor Wands Wolford.)
