Sophia was the daughter of Henry Kulhman and Rachel (Reinholdt) Kulhman.
Henry Kulhman was born in Prussia on September 29, 1821.

Henry's first wife was named Ann. They had four children: Mary, Caroline, Betty and William Kuhlman.They were first in Ohio, where Mary was born, and then in Indiana, where Caroline, Betty and William were born.
By 1860, the Kuhlman family had moved to Effingham County, Illinois. In the 1860 census, their last name was spelled Colman. They lived in the little village of Elliotstown.
Henry helped found St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dietrich in 1860. The church recently celebrated their 150th anniversary, and invited all the descendents of Henry Kuhlman and the other founding members to attend the celebration.

3. Biddy J./Bertha/Betty Kuhlman was born about 1854 in Indiana. Confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in 1869. Married Frederick Kruse April 4, 1875, in Effingham County, Illinois. He was born about 1849 in Prussia. His name is spelled Frederic Krewsa in the 1880 census. Betty probably died in 1879. She isn’t listed in the 1880 census.
