Family of Mary "Polly" Wilson
Wife of James G. Garred
Mary "Polly" Wilson was born October 27, 1800, in Kanawha County, Virginia. She married James Graham Garred on March 2, 1820, in Cabell County, Virginia. (Her brother, Charles Wilson, married James Garred's sister, Hannah, a few years later.) (1)
James and Polly "...first settled near St. Joseph MO in 1839. Owned a large farm and prospered until he took up drinking, lost his farm and returned to KY. His father and brother Ulysses set him up in the grocery business in Louisa but that too floundered." (2)
They had seven children: Phoebe, Felix, David, James, Ulysses, Anderson (our ancestor), and Sarah.
Sometime before her death in 1865, Polly moved to Benton County, Oregon, where her son Felix lived.
"Mary [Polly] Wilson was a splendid woman and admired by all of her friends for her efforts to bring her family up under difficulty. They had a family of smart children....." said her son, Ulysses V. Garred. (3)
Polly's parents were James Perot Wilson and Sarah Mounts. They were married in 1795 and had 13 children in all. (4) They "... had a farm on 12 Pole Creek, Lawrence Co, KY." (5)
Family of James Perot Wilson:
Mary's father, James Parot Wilson was born in the colony of Virginia on June 22, 1767, in the Wilson Settlement along the Jackson River of Augusta County. (His cousins were attacked by Indians in the Wilson settlement. One daughter was badly hurt, and one son was kidnapped and never found. You can read the thrilling story of the event at http://genealogytrails.com/wva/greenbrier/earlyborderhistory.html .)
[UPDATE: The following information may be INCORRECT. Some fellow researchers say that James P. Wilson is NOT the son of Stephen Wilson and Jane Dinwiddie, and that his parents are currently unknown. See http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/WVGREENB/2008-03/1205700366]
James Parot's father was Stephen Wilson, an immigrant from northern Ireland. This website has more information about Stephen Wilson's records as an early settler of Augusta County, Virginia. http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Stephen_Wilson_%287%29
James' mother was Jane Dinwiddie, daughter of Robert Dinwiddie and Elizabeth (last name possibly Wilson); granddaughter of James Dinwiddie and Ann Barnett; and great-granddaughter of Scottish immigrant David Dinwiddie, born 1662.
(I did not find any connection between our Dinwiddies and the Robert Dinwiddie of French and Indian War fame who served as governor of the Virginia colony.)

Family of Sarah Mounts
Mary's mother, Sarah Mounts, was born April 19, 1775, in the colony of Maryland. (12) She was the daughter of John Lawrence Mounts and Elizabeth Raincrow. She had a sister named Polly and a possibly a brother named David. http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mounts/61.62.66.158.1/mb.ashx
John Lawrence Mounts was born in Virginia and fought in the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Richard Mounts and Sarah Davies, and the grandson of English immigrant Richard Mounts, Sr., born 1635. (13)
Elizabeth Raincrow is believed to have been a Cherokee Indian. Her original name is said to be Eunoka. (14) In 1894, two of her great-grandsons submitted a petition to the Cherokee National Council for citizenship based on their Cherokee connection. (15) Her parent's are unknown.
Sarah Mount's parents apparently died young, as she was given a guardian (Agnes Givens, who was also a family friends of the Wilsons.)
