Ancestry of Elizabeth "Betsey" Dill
(wife of William Wallace)
Elizabeth “Betsey” Dill was born about 1760 in New York. Although her parents are not known, she was probably the granddaughter of immigrant Caleb Dill.
“According to family tradition the Dills were originally Norseman, coming from Norway to Germany to escape oppressions, thence emigrating to the north of Ireland about the time of the siege of Derry. They were valiant adherents of the cause of William of Orange, in the religious wars of that period, and held high rank in the army, the name being changed from Diehl to Dill.” (J. H. Beers. Commemorative Biographical Record of Ulster County, New York, 1896, p. 240.)
Caleb Dill immigrated to Orange County, New York from Ireland about 1730. (Beers.)
He had at least four sons, one of which is likely the father of Betsey Dill.
