The Family of Ann Van Laten
Klaas VanLaten was born April 27, 1866, in the Netherlands. He married Aaltje Vanlangen probably around 1890.
In 1892, the young couple emigrated to the United States aboard the Veendam. They arrived in New York City on April 28, 1892. (Source: New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957, Ancestry.com.) Here is a photograph of the Veendam from http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=veen1.

Aaltje was expecting a child during the voyage. Their daughter Hattie was born in September. Their other children born in the United States were Bertha, Frank, Cornelius (Ann VanLaten's father), and Claude.
The VanLaten family moved to the Chicago area. Klaas became an official naturalized U.S. citizen in 1903. He now used the Americanized name "Nick" and Aaltje became known as Alice. Nick VanLaten became a chicken farmer in Cook County.
Cornelius was born August 23, 1902. From what I understand, he and his brother Frank continued in the prosperous Van Laten Poultry Farm. Frank was known as a "prominent south side gardener." Sometime after 1920, Cornelius married Anna Kloese, daughter of Dutch immigrants John C. and Alice/Agatha (Klooy) Kloese.
Cornelius and Anna had four children: Ann (1924), Claude "Sonny" (1926), John (1928) and Judy (1942).
Anna died in 1971, and Cornelius remarried widow Frances (Bajema) Teeselink.
