Third Generation: Charles and Susannah (Rookings) Hamlin
Charles Hamlin was born about 1680 in Surry County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of Stephen Hamlin, Jr. His mother is unknown. He had at least two siblings, John Hamlin, who was a captain in the Revolutionary War, and Agnes Hamlin, who married Sylvanus Stokes.
Charles’ father died when he was only seven years old. During his childhood, he had at least three different guardians: Capt. Thomas Cocke, Abraham Hinton, and John Jones.[1]
Sometime prior to 1715, Charles married Susannah Rookings, the daughter of William and Ann Rookings, and granddaughter of William Rookings, a participant in Bacon’s Rebellion.
Charles and Susannah had a son named Stephen Hamlin, III, who was born about 1715, and is our ancestor.
In 1714, Charles purchased land in Surry County. He bought 126 acres from Gregory Rawlins.[2] When Susannah’s father died in 1715, he left her and Charles “the property known as ‘Greens’….,” which would revert back to the Rookings family after Charles and Susannah died.[3]
Charles Hamlin died 1721 at the early age of 41. It is believed he left a will, but it has not been found. Is unknown if he had any other children besides Stephen. Charles’ widow, Susannah remarried twice – to Timothy Bridges, who died within a couple years of their marriage, and then to Marmaduke Cheatham.[4] Read about Susannah's life and ancestry by clicking --> here.
(Note: One of Charles and Susannah’s grandsons, William Hamlin, married Elizabeth Bridges. Her parents have not yet been discovered, but I suspect she was related to Timothy Bridges.)
