The Family of Sarah "Sallie" Poythress, wife of Stephen Hamlin, III
First Generation

Francis became a captain in the colonial military, by an 1648 "Act to raise force of men on North side of James River from counties of Henrico, Charles City, York, Warwick, Elizabeth City and North Hampton under command of Lt. Fra. Poythress, who shall follow directions of Capt. Henry Fleet, and they shall build a fort on Rappahannock River etc." Poythress had "power to collect taxes in the more or less turbulent new county of Northumberland...." (1)
In 1649, he was elected as a Burgess in Virginia's legislative body. (1)
One of the daughters of from his first marriage is often said to be Jane Poythress, who married Thomas Rolfe, the only son of John Rolfe and Pocohontas. Alas, this has been shown to be inaccurate. Please see http://www.poythress.net/batte.html for the explanation.
Francis' second wife is believed to have been Mary Sloman, daughter of John Sloman and Katherine Eppes. Their son and our ancestor, John Poythress, was born about 1635. (1)

John Poythress was born in Jamestowne, Virginia, the son of Captain Francis Poythress and his second wife, Mary.
He was given 50 acres in 1661, and then 350 acres near the Nottoway River in 1701.
He married Christon Peebles, daughter of David and Elsbeth (Mackie) Peebles. The Peeble family came from Scotland, likely on the ship Bon Accord, for that is the name they gave their plantation. The Bon Accord plantation came into the Poythress family through John's wife Christon, and later ended up in the Cocke family.
There was a John Poythress who was a Burgess, but one source says that this was probably his son, who had the same name.
John and Christon's three known children are William (our ancestor), John, and Peter.
