Cornelius Barentsen Slecht (1616 Holland - 1697 N.Y.)
and Tryntje Tysee Bosch (1620 Holland - 1684 N. Y.)
"Cornelius was the son of Barent Corneliussen Sleght and Jaquemine Piertergen. He was one of the original Dutch colonists of New Holland and he helped purchase land from the local Native Americans and was a founder of more than one town in what is modern New York state. He married Tryntje Tysse Bosch in 1642...." (1)
Cornelius was born in Woerdon, Holland, in 1616. In those days, the Dutch had an unique naming system called "patronymics." In this system, a person's last name (surname) was based on their father's first name. Because Cornelius' father was named Barent, Cornelius was called Cornelius Barentsen.
Cornelius and his family probably came to the colonies around 1652.
"6th great grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt and also a great grandfather of many American Revolutionary War soldiers and of at least one Hollywood star, Marlon Brando." *
Tryntje "was the daughter of Thys Jans Bos and Marrigie Maartens Bos." * Along with her husband, she was one of the early settlers of New York (or New Netherlands, as it was then known.)
We descend through Cornelius' and Tryntje's son Hendrick, who was also born in Holland.
